The twelve Western signs are traditionally grouped into four elements — Fire, Earth, Air and Water — with three signs sharing each element. The Chinese zodiac instead runs on a 12-year animal cycle rather than a 12-part division of a single year, and the two systems are entirely independent traditions from different cultures.
How the sign is determined
Western sign: matched against 12 fixed conventional date ranges (for example, Aries runs March 21 to April 19).Chinese animal: (birth year − 2020) mod 12, mapped onto the 12-animal cycle starting from Rat, since 2020 is a documented Year of the Rat.Cusp note: several published sources shift a Western zodiac boundary by a day in a given year, because the tropical year isn't a whole number of days — so a birth date within a day of a listed boundary may be quoted under either sign elsewhere. Lunar new year note: the real Chinese zodiac changes on Lunar New Year, a date that moves between late January and mid-February each year, not on January 1 — so someone born in January or early-to-mid February may actually belong to the previous animal's year. This calculator uses the plain calendar year as a simple approximation rather than looking up the exact lunar date.

- July 4 falls after June 21 and before July 22, which is the published range for Cancer.
- Cancer's element is Water.
- On the zodiac wheel, the sign before Cancer is Gemini and the sign after is Leo.
- If the birth year were 2024, the Chinese zodiac animal for that year is the Dragon — an entirely separate system based on the birth year, not the birth month or day.
Frequently asked questions
Is this the same as an astrologer's 'cusp' calculation?
No. Real ephemeris-based astrology tracks the Sun's exact position, which can shift a sign boundary by up to a day depending on the year and even the hour of birth. This calculator uses one fixed, widely published set of calendar date ranges instead, so it will occasionally differ by a day from a source that accounts for the year-specific cusp.
Why might someone born in early February get a different Chinese zodiac animal elsewhere?
Because the true Chinese zodiac year begins on Lunar New Year, which falls on a different Gregorian date each year (typically between January 21 and February 20). This calculator uses the plain calendar year as an approximation and states that limitation directly rather than hiding it — for an exact answer, check the actual Lunar New Year date for that specific birth year.
Does this calculator make personality or compatibility claims?
