How this calculator works

This calculator counts the weekdays — Monday through Friday — between two dates, which is what most shipping estimates, payment terms and project timelines actually mean by "business days." Choose whether the end date itself should count, since "5 business days from Monday" is sometimes read as including that Monday and sometimes not.

Important: public holidays are not subtracted. Holiday calendars vary enormously by country, region, and even by employer, so a general-purpose calculator cannot know which days off apply to your situation. If your deadline needs to exclude specific holidays, subtract those days from the result by hand, or add them to the end date.

How weekdays are counted

Count every complete Monday-to-Friday week in the range as 5 business days.For the leftover days that don't make a full week, count only the ones that fall on Monday through Friday.Weekend days = total calendar days in the range − business days.

The end date is included or excluded from the range based on the segment you choose, before this count runs. Dates entered in either order are sorted automatically.

Worked example

  1. Start: Monday, January 1, 2024. End: Monday, January 8, 2024. End date included.
  2. That is 8 calendar days: one full week (Mon–Sun, 5 business days) plus the following Monday (1 more business day).
  3. Total: 6 business days, 2 weekend days.
  4. If the end date is excluded instead, the range effectively stops at Sunday, January 7 — 5 business days, one fewer than before.

Frequently asked questions

Why doesn't this subtract public holidays?

Holiday calendars differ by country, region, religion and employer, and change from year to year. A single fixed list would be wrong for most visitors, so this calculator sticks to the one thing everyone agrees on — the Monday-to-Friday weekday count — and lets you manually account for any holidays that apply to you.

Should I include or exclude the end date?

It depends on how your deadline is phrased. "Delivery within 5 business days of ordering" usually excludes the order date itself but includes the delivery date; "business days between X and Y" is ambiguous either way, so this calculator lets you choose explicitly.

What counts as a business day in this calculator?

Any Monday through Friday. Saturday and Sunday are always treated as non-business days, regardless of local weekend conventions (some countries use a Friday-Saturday weekend instead — this tool uses the Monday-Friday convention common in shipping and finance).

Can the two dates be in either order?

Yes. If the end date is earlier than the start date, the calculator swaps them before counting, so the result is the same either way.

How many business days are there in a typical year?

About 260 to 262, before subtracting any holidays. A year has 365 days (366 in a leap year), which is 52 complete weeks — 260 business days — plus 1 extra day (2 in a leap year) that falls on a weekday about 5 times out of 7. The exact count depends on which weekday January 1 falls on and whether the year is a leap year.
