How this calculator works
VO2 max is the maximum rate at which your body can take up and use oxygen during intense exercise, widely used as a marker of aerobic fitness. A precise measurement needs a lab treadmill test with gas analysis, but three field methods estimate it reasonably well without any equipment: comparing your resting and maximum heart rate, the Cooper 12-minute run test, or a timed 1.5-mile run.
These are estimates for general fitness tracking, not medical advice and not a substitute for a lab-measured VO2 max or a doctor's assessment of your cardiovascular fitness. Each method has a published margin of error, and none of them account for your specific running economy, terrain, weather, or motivation on the day of the test — use them to track your own trend over time rather than to compare precisely against someone else's number.
The three formulas

The Cooper and 1.5-mile formulas both come from Kenneth Cooper's original field-test research and are widely used interchangeably, since the two tests are designed to give closely comparable results.
Worked example: resting HR 60, max HR 190
- Divide max HR by resting HR: 190 ÷ 60 ≈ 3.167.
- Multiply by 15.3: 3.167 × 15.3 ≈ 48.5 ml/kg/min.
- For a 30-year-old man, that falls in the 'Good' range against the published treadmill percentile table (60th-80th percentile for that age group).
- The same person running 2,400 meters in 12 minutes on the Cooper test would estimate (2,400 − 504.9) ÷ 44.73 ≈ 42.4 ml/kg/min — a reminder that different field methods do not always agree exactly.
Frequently asked questions
Which method is most accurate?
All three are field estimates, not lab measurements, and each has a published margin of error of several ml/kg/min against direct gas-analysis testing. The Cooper and 1.5-mile run tests generally track actual aerobic fitness better than the resting heart rate method, since they measure real exercise performance rather than an indirect heart rate proxy.
How is my maximum heart rate determined?
Ideally from a real maximal exercise test. If you do not know yours, '220 minus age' is a commonly used rough estimate, though it has wide individual variation. This calculator lets you enter your own value either way.
Why does the same person get different VO2max estimates from different methods?
Each method predicts VO2max from a different proxy — heart rate ratio, or running performance — using a population-average formula. Individual differences in running economy, heart rate variability, and testing conditions mean the methods will not always agree precisely, even though they are all estimating the same underlying quantity.
What do the fitness categories mean?
They compare your estimated VO2max to a published percentile table for people of your age and sex, ranging from 'Poor' (bottom 20%) to 'Superior' (top 10%). They describe where you sit relative to others tested in the reference population, not a medical judgment about your health.
Can VO2max predict how fast I can race?
It correlates with endurance performance but is not the whole story — running economy, lactate threshold, and pacing all matter too. Two runners with the same VO2max can have quite different race times.
