How this calculator works

There is no single correct daily water number for everyone. This calculator applies a commonly used starting-point heuristic — 30 to 35 milliliters per kilogram of body weight, plus an addition for exercise — so you have a concrete number to work from, not a rule to follow rigidly.

The honest answer is that fluid needs vary with climate, activity, diet, and individual physiology, and the best everyday guides are simple: drink when you're thirsty, and check that urine is pale yellow rather than dark. For a population-level reference point, the U.S. National Academy of Medicine (NAM) sets an adequate intake for total water — all beverages plus water from food — of about 3.7 L/day for men and 2.7 L/day for women. That figure includes water from food (roughly 20% of total intake for most people), so it is not directly comparable to a 'glasses of water' target. This calculator's number is an estimate, not medical advice, and is not appropriate for managing a medical condition that affects fluid balance.

This is a widely used rule of thumb, not a clinical requirement. It is not the same measurement as the NAM adequate intake figure, which includes water from food and beverages other than plain water.

Worked example: 70 kg, 30 minutes of exercise

  1. Midpoint estimate: 70 kg × 32.5 mL/kg = 2,275 mL from body weight alone.
  2. Activity addition: 30 minutes ÷ 30 × 350 mL = 350 mL.
  3. Total: 2,275 + 350 = 2,625 mL, or 2.625 liters.
  4. Converted: about 88.8 US fl oz, or roughly 11.1 US cups.

Frequently asked questions

Is 8 glasses a day (the '8x8 rule') accurate?

It's a memorable rounding, not a researched target — 8 glasses of 8 fl oz is about 1.9 liters, which is close to the low end of the body-weight heuristic for a smaller adult but too low for a larger or more active person.

Does coffee or tea count toward hydration?

Yes. Caffeinated drinks have a mild diuretic effect but still contribute net fluid, and typical daily consumption does not cause meaningful dehydration in most healthy adults.

How do I know if I'm actually drinking enough?

Thirst and urine color are the two most practical everyday signals: pale yellow urine and rarely feeling thirsty both suggest adequate intake. This calculator's number is a starting estimate, not a substitute for those signals.

Can I drink too much water?

Yes, though it's uncommon outside of endurance sports or specific medical conditions. Drinking far more than the body can process can dilute blood sodium (hyponatremia). If you have a kidney or heart condition, ask your doctor about a safe intake for you.

Why does hot weather or altitude change how much I need?

Heat and altitude both increase fluid losses, through sweat and faster breathing respectively, so the same activity level requires more replacement fluid than in a cool, low-altitude setting.
