How this calculator works

Enter the price and quantity for two products and this calculator divides each into a price per unit, then reports which one is actually cheaper and by what percentage. The optional unit label just changes the wording of the result — oz, ct, lb, kg, whatever is printed on the shelf tag — and does not affect the math.

Grocery and warehouse stores often price the larger package higher in total while it is cheaper per unit, and occasionally the reverse: a 'bulk' size priced higher per unit than the regular size. Comparing the unit price directly, rather than eyeballing the two total prices, is the only reliable way to tell.

The formula

Unit price = total price ÷ quantityCheaper by % = (higher unit price − lower unit price) ÷ higher unit price × 100

The percentage is expressed relative to the more expensive option, matching how 'X% cheaper' is normally read: it answers what fraction of the pricier option's cost you avoid by choosing the other one.

Worked example: 12-pack vs. 24-pack of soda

  1. 12-pack priced at $5.49: unit price = 5.49 ÷ 12 = $0.4575 per can.
  2. 24-pack priced at $9.99: unit price = 9.99 ÷ 24 = $0.41625 per can.
  3. Difference: 0.4575 − 0.41625 = $0.04125 per can.
  4. As a percentage of the pricier 12-pack: 0.04125 ÷ 0.4575 × 100 ≈ 9.02% — the 24-pack is the better deal.

Frequently asked questions

Why isn't the bigger package always cheaper per unit?

Packaging costs, promotions and shelf placement all affect pricing independently of size. Store brands and multi-buy promotions frequently make a mid-size package the cheapest per unit, not the largest one — always check the shelf tag or compute it directly.

Do the two items need the same unit of measurement?

Yes — compare ounces to ounces, or counts to counts, not ounces to counts. If one label lists ounces and the other liters or grams, convert both to the same unit first, since dividing by mismatched quantities produces a meaningless price.

What does it mean if the unit prices are equal?

It means neither product has a cost advantage per unit; the choice comes down to whether you actually need the larger quantity, storage space, or shelf life before the product expires.

Can I use this for anything besides groceries?

Yes — the same division works for any two options priced per quantity: subscription tiers priced per user, fuel priced per liter versus gallon (once converted), or bulk supplies priced per box versus per piece.

Is the cheaper unit price always the better buy overall?

Not necessarily. A lower unit price only matters if you will use the extra quantity before it spoils or becomes obsolete; buying more than you need at a lower unit price can still cost more overall than the smaller, pricier option.
