Scaling a 4-serving recipe to 6 servings uses a 1.5x factor, so 2 cups of flour becomes 3 cups; scaled to 9 servings (2.25x), 1 cup of milk becomes 2 1/4 cups. The scale factor is desired servings divided by original servings, applied to every ingredient amount.

How this calculator works

Enter the number of servings a recipe was written for and the number of servings you actually want, then list each ingredient amount. This calculator multiplies every amount by the same scale factor and rounds the result to the nearest eighth, the smallest increment most measuring cups and spoons actually mark, so you get a usable amount like "2 1/4 cups" instead of an unmeasurable decimal like "2.1875 cups."

Scaling works cleanly for most liquids, flours, sugars and other bulk ingredients because they behave proportionally: twice the servings needs twice the amount. It is far less reliable for spices, salt, leavening agents (baking soda, baking powder, yeast) and cooking times. Doubling a recipe rarely means doubling the cinnamon or the baking soda — those ingredients affect flavor intensity and chemical reactions in ways that do not scale linearly, so taste and adjust leavening and seasoning by a smaller fraction than the scale factor suggests, and check doneness by eye or thermometer rather than by a scaled time.

The formula

Every ingredient in a printed recipe is assumed to already be correctly proportioned to the stated serving count, so the same scale factor applies to every row.

Worked example: 4-serving recipe scaled to 6 servings

  1. Original recipe serves 4; you want 6 servings, so the scale factor is 6 ÷ 4 = 1.5.
  2. 2 cups of flour becomes 2 × 1.5 = 3 cups.
  3. 1 cup of sugar becomes 1 × 1.5 = 1.5 cups, shown as "1 1/2 cups."
  4. 0.5 teaspoons of baking soda becomes 0.5 × 1.5 = 0.75 teaspoons — but consider using slightly less, since leavening does not always scale linearly.

Frequently asked questions

Why does the calculator show fractions like 2 1/4 instead of decimals?

Measuring cups and spoons are marked in eighths (1/8, 1/4, 1/2, etc.), not decimals. Rounding the scaled amount to the nearest eighth gives you a number you can actually measure, at the cost of a small, usually unnoticeable rounding error.

Should I scale spices and salt by the same factor as everything else?

Not exactly. Seasoning intensity does not always increase proportionally with quantity — many cooks scale spices, salt and chili by roughly three-quarters of the calculated factor for larger batches and taste as they go, rather than applying the full multiplier blindly.

Does baking soda or baking powder scale the same way as flour?

No. Leavening agents react chemically with other ingredients and with the pan size and oven, so simply multiplying by the scale factor can over-leaven a large batch. When more than doubling a recipe, many bakers reduce leavening slightly below the calculated amount and watch the bake closely.

Do I need to change the cooking time when I scale a recipe?

Often, yes, but not proportionally. A larger batch in the same pan may need a longer bake at the same temperature; a larger volume split across more of the same-size pans usually keeps roughly the same time. Cooking time depends on heat penetration, not on ingredient quantity alone, so check doneness rather than scaling the time by the same factor as the ingredients.

What if I only need to scale some ingredients, like just the sauce?
