A 10 by 10 foot deck built with 5 inch wide boards laid tight (no gap) needs 24 rows of decking to span the width, and with joists spaced 12 inches on center along the length it needs 11 joists — the classic fencepost-style count of spans plus one. How this calculator works

Enter the deck's length and width, which direction the decking boards will run, the board's face width and the gap you plan to leave between boards, a waste allowance, and your joist spacing. The calculator returns the deck's square footage, how many deck boards to buy, how many joists and beam lines the frame needs, roughly how many posts support those beams, and a rough fastener count based on two fasteners per board at every joist crossing.

Deck framing has a simple, layered structure: decking boards sit on top and run perpendicular to the joists beneath them; joists are spaced along the deck at 12, 16 or 24 inches on center and run across to the beams that support them; beams in turn run parallel to the decking and are supported by posts spaced along their length. The joist-span and post-spacing values used here are typical planning figures, not a substitute for your local building code's span tables or a structural professional — always confirm actual spans for your specific lumber species, grade and size before building anything load-bearing.

The formula

'Run length' is the dimension the boards run along and the joists are spaced across; 'span width' is the dimension the boards are laid side by side across and the joists themselves span. Swapping the board direction swaps which deck dimension plays each role.

Worked example: a 12 ft × 10 ft deck

  1. Boards run the 12 ft length; the 10 ft width (120 in) is spanned by boards 5.5 in wide with a 0.125 in gap, a 5.625 in pitch: 120 ÷ 5.625 ≈ 21.3, rounded up to 22 rows.
  2. With a 10% waste allowance: 22 × 1.1 = 24.2, rounded up to 25 deck boards.
  3. At 16 in joist spacing along the 12 ft (144 in) length: 144 ÷ 16 = 9 spans, so 9 + 1 = 10 joists.
  4. With an 8 ft max joist span across the 10 ft width: ceiling(10 ÷ 8) + 1 = 3 beam lines; with a 6 ft max post spacing along the 12 ft run: ceiling(12 ÷ 6) + 1 = 3 posts per line, for 9 posts total.

Frequently asked questions

Which way should deck boards run?

Most decks run boards perpendicular to the house for a clean sightline, or diagonally for a design accent (which increases waste and cut count). This calculator lets you pick either deck dimension for the board direction so you can compare the material counts either way.

How is the joist count a 'fencepost problem' just like a fence?

A straight run of evenly spaced joists always has one more joist than it has spans between them — the same off-by-one detail that trips people up when counting fence posts. Twelve spans between joists means thirteen joists, not twelve.

Are the beam and post counts accurate for my deck?

They are a reasonable planning estimate based on a typical maximum joist span and post spacing that you can adjust, but real beam and post sizing depends on your local building code's span tables, the lumber species and grade you use, snow and live load requirements, and deck height. Treat the posts and beams figures here as a starting point for discussion with your building department or a professional, not a final structural plan.

Why does the fastener count use 2 per board per joist?

Two screws or nails per board at each joist crossing is the standard fastening pattern for most residential decking, giving each board two fixed points at every support. Hidden fastener clip systems and picture-frame borders change this count — treat the figure here as a rough planning number, not an exact material list.

Does the waste allowance apply to joists and posts too?

No — the waste percentage in this calculator only inflates the deck board count, since off-cuts and mis-cuts are far more common with decking than with structural framing. Joists, beam lines and posts are calculated at the exact counts the spans require; add a board or two of overage for framing lumber separately if you expect damage or field adjustments.
