Seeding rates differ substantially between grass species — cool-season grasses like Kentucky bluegrass are seeded far more sparingly than tall fescue or perennial ryegrass, which germinate differently and are commonly blended or seeded alone at different densities.
The rates used here are midpoints of ranges commonly published by university extension services: roughly 2-3 lb per 1,000 sq ft for Kentucky bluegrass, 6-8 lb for tall fescue, a wider 4-9 lb range for perennial ryegrass depending on whether it's a pure stand or an overseeding mix, and 1-2 lb for bermudagrass. Overseeding an existing lawn uses half the new-lawn rate in this calculator, a simplification some extension guidance supports directly and some treats case by case — always check your specific cultivar's label and your local extension service, since actual recommended rates vary by region, seed purity, and germination conditions.

Worked example: 1,000 sq ft new lawn, tall fescue
- Lawn area: 1,000 sq ft. Grass type: tall fescue, new-lawn rate 7 lb per 1,000 sq ft.
- Pounds needed: (1,000 ÷ 1,000) × 7 = 7 lb.
- At a 25 lb bag size: ceiling(7 ÷ 25) = 1 bag.
- If overseeding the same lawn instead: 7 × 0.5 = 3.5 lb, still 1 bag at 25 lb.
Frequently asked questions
Why does overseeding use less seed than a new lawn?
An existing lawn already has some grass cover competing for light, moisture and space, so seeding it at the full new-lawn rate would waste seed that can't establish. Many extension guides recommend roughly half the new-establishment rate for overseeding a lawn that still has reasonable turf density, with higher rates reserved for thin or bare patches.
Which grass type should I choose?
Cool-season grasses (Kentucky bluegrass, tall fescue, perennial ryegrass) suit northern and transition-zone climates with cold winters; warm-season grasses like bermudagrass suit hot southern climates and go dormant in cold weather. Sticking close to the published rate range generally gives better establishment than maximizing seed density.
