How this calculator works
Enter your wall perimeter (add up each wall's length yourself, or use twice the sum of length and width for a rectangular room), wall height, and roll dimensions — the defaults are a standard US single roll (20.5 inches wide, 33 feet long) or a standard European roll (53 cm wide, 10 meters long) once you switch units. The calculator works out how many strips fit on one roll, how many strips the whole room needs, and how many rolls to buy.
A pattern repeat adds extra length to every strip so the pattern lines up correctly at the ceiling from strip to strip, which can noticeably reduce how many usable strips come out of each roll — a large repeat is one of the most common reasons wallpaper runs short partway through a room. This calculator always adds a full extra roll on top of the exact roll count, since running one strip short mid-project means an exact dye-lot match becomes a real risk.

Worked example: 40 ft perimeter, 8 ft walls, standard US roll, no pattern repeat
- Effective strip height: 8 ft = 96 in (no repeat to add).
- Strips per roll: 396 in roll length ÷ 96 in = 4.125, rounded down to 4 usable strips per roll.
- Strips needed: 40 ft = 480 in perimeter ÷ 20.5 in roll width ≈ 23.41, rounded up to 24 strips.
- Rolls: 24 ÷ 4 = 6 rolls exactly, plus 1 for waste = 7 rolls to buy.
Frequently asked questions
Why buy one extra roll beyond the exact calculation?
Cutting mistakes, a strip torn during hanging, and future repairs after furniture damage are common enough that most installers keep at least one spare roll on hand. Matching an exact dye lot months or years later is often impossible, so having a same-batch spare roll left over is worth the small extra cost.
How much does pattern repeat really matter?
A lot, for a large-scale pattern. On an 8 foot (96 in) wall with a standard 33 ft roll, a 24 inch repeat raises the effective strip height to 120 in, which drops strips per roll from 4 to 3 — a change that can push the total rolls needed up a full roll or more.
Should I subtract door and window openings from the perimeter?
It's optional, and this calculator defaults to not subtracting anything, which is the more conservative choice — the cut-off pieces above and below an opening frequently get reused as short strips elsewhere (over a door, under a window), so subtracting the full opening width can undercount what you actually need.
US and European wallpaper rolls are different sizes — does that matter?
Yes — a standard US single roll (about 20.5 in × 33 ft) covers roughly 56 square feet nominally, while a standard European roll (about 53 cm × 10 m) covers about 5.3 square meters (around 57 square feet). Always check your specific product's actual labeled dimensions, since roll sizes vary by manufacturer and wallpaper type.
Can I mix rolls from different production batches?
Avoid it if possible. Wallpaper printing runs can have small color and pattern variations between batches (a 'dye lot' or 'run number'), usually printed on the roll's label — buying all your rolls from the same batch number avoids a visible mismatch between strips.
