How this calculator works

Words per minute (WPM) is the standard way typing speed is measured, using a fixed convention: one 'word' equals 5 characters, including spaces and punctuation, regardless of how the text is actually broken into real words. This makes WPM comparable across passages with different average word lengths.

This calculator takes the characters (or words) you typed, the time it took, and how many uncorrected errors you made, and turns them into gross WPM, net WPM (which penalizes errors) and an accuracy percentage. It is a calculator for numbers you already have from a typing test or timed exercise — it does not administer a live typing test itself.

Net WPM and accuracy are both floored at 0 in this calculator, since a very high error count relative to text length would otherwise produce a nonsensical negative speed.

Worked example: 250 characters in 1 minute, 5 errors

  1. Convert characters to words using the 5-characters-per-word convention: 250 ÷ 5 = 50 words.
  2. Gross WPM = 50 words ÷ 1 minute = 50 WPM.
  3. Net WPM = 50 − (5 errors ÷ 1 minute) = 45 WPM.
  4. Accuracy = (250 − 5) ÷ 250 × 100 = 98%.

Frequently asked questions

Why does 1 word always equal 5 characters?

Real words vary a lot in length, which would make WPM inconsistent between passages. Typing tests standardized on 5 characters (including the space after a word) decades ago as an average word length, so speeds are comparable across different text samples.

What's the difference between gross and net WPM?

Gross WPM only measures raw typing volume over time and ignores mistakes. Net WPM subtracts a penalty for uncorrected errors, so it better reflects usable output — most typing tests report net WPM as the headline number.

Is this a real typing test?

No. This calculator turns numbers you already measured (characters or words typed, time elapsed, error count) into WPM and accuracy. It doesn't present text to type or track keystrokes live.

What typing speed is considered good?
