This calculator estimates your next ovulation day and fertile window from the first day of your last period and your average cycle length. It also projects the same estimate forward for the next three cycles, assuming your cycle length stays about the same.

The luteal-phase convention

The luteal phase (from ovulation to the next period) is commonly treated as a fixed 14 days, while the earlier follicular phase varies in length - this is why a longer or shorter overall cycle mostly shifts when ovulation happens, not how long the luteal phase lasts. Real luteal-phase length still varies somewhat from person to person and cycle to cycle.

Worked example: last period January 1, 28-day cycle

  1. Ovulation offset: 28 − 14 = 14 days after the start of the period.
  2. Estimated ovulation: January 1 + 14 days = January 15.
  3. Fertile window: January 15 − 5 days = January 10, through January 15.
  4. Next period: January 1 + 28 days = January 29, and the next cycle's ovulation would be estimated around February 12.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use this to avoid getting pregnant?

No. This calculator gives an estimate based on average timing, but actual ovulation can happen earlier or later than predicted, especially with irregular cycles, stress, illness, or travel. It is not a reliable form of contraception.

Why is the fertile window 5 days before ovulation plus the day itself?

Sperm can survive in the reproductive tract for up to about 5 days, while the egg is typically viable for less than 24 hours after ovulation. Counting backward from ovulation captures the days intercourse could still result in conception.

What if my cycle length varies month to month?

Enter your typical or average length, and treat the estimate as a rough window rather than a single certain day. If you track ovulation signs (basal body temperature, cervical mucus, or ovulation test kits), those can refine the estimate for your actual cycle.

Does a longer cycle mean ovulation happens later or earlier?

Later. Under the standard convention used here, a longer cycle shifts ovulation later relative to the start of the period, because the luteal phase is assumed to stay about 14 days regardless of total cycle length.

What would the estimated ovulation day be for a 30-day cycle?

It would be day 16 of the cycle: the luteal-phase convention used here subtracts 14 from the cycle length, so 30 − 14 = 16 days after the first day of the period, two days later than the day-14 estimate for a standard 28-day cycle. The 6-day fertile window would then run from day 11 through day 16. As with any cycle length, treat this as an estimate rather than a guarantee - it is not a reliable method of contraception.
